Uses of Vimovo
Vimovo is a dual-action medication combining esomeprazole and naproxen. Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that mitigates inflammation, pain, and fever by inhibiting specific substances in the body. Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, reduces stomach acid production. Vimovo is indicated for treating osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Precautions and Warnings
Vimovo should not be administered immediately before or following heart bypass surgery. Patients should consult a healthcare provider if they have existing conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, liver, or kidney disease before using Vimovo.
Be aware that naproxen may cause gastrointestinal bleeding and renal issues, and it may elevate the risk of a potentially fatal heart attack or stroke. Esomeprazole, on the other hand, can cause new or worsening lupus symptoms.
Dosage
For adults with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis, the usual dosage is one Vimovo tablet twice a day. Each tablet contains either 375 mg of naproxen and 20 mg of esomeprazole, or 500 mg of naproxen and 20 mg of esomeprazole.
For patients aged 12 years and older, weighing at least 38 kg, the dosage is the same: one tablet twice daily, with each tablet containing 375 mg naproxen and 20 mg esomeprazole.
