Uses of Prozac

Prozac is an antidepressant medication utilized to manage episodes of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, and bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder. It belongs to the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which function by enhancing mood, appetite, energy levels, and sleep. Prozac can reduce undesirable emotions such as anxiety, fear, and suicidal thoughts.

Additionally, Prozac is prescribed for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It is available under the generic name Fluoxetine.

Prozac Precautions and Warnings

Prozac should not be used if you have an allergy to it. There is a risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts while taking this medication. If you notice changes in behavior, increased depression, or anxiety attacks, seek immediate medical care.

Before starting Prozac, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of any of the following conditions:

• Sexual dysfunction
• Liver cirrhosis
• Diabetes
• Seizures
• Bipolar disorder
• Substance abuse

Prozac Dosage

The recommended doses of Prozac are as follows:

For Depression:

• Take 20 mg of Prozac orally once daily.
• The maximum daily dosage is 80 mg.

For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD):

• Take 20 mg of Prozac orally once daily.
• The maximum daily dosage is 80 mg.

For Panic Disorder:

• Take 10 mg of Prozac orally once daily.
• The maximum daily dosage is 60 mg.

For Bulimia:

• Take 60 mg of Prozac orally once daily.

For Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD):

• Take 20 mg of Prozac orally once daily.
• The maximum daily dosage is 80 mg.

Prozac Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

• Unusual mood changes
• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Muscle weakness
• Tremors
• Decreased sexual desire
• Unexpected weight loss
