Uses of Azithromycin

Azithromycin is a versatile antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections. It is effective against chest infections such as pneumonia, sinusitis, certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Lyme disease, and skin infections. Classified under Macrolides, this medication works by eradicating or inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for these infections.

Azithromycin is available commercially under the brand names Azasite and Zithromax.

Azithromycin Precautions and Warnings

Refrain from using Azithromycin if you have an allergy to it. This medication can cause QT prolongation, which leads to irregular heart rhythms. Seek immediate medical help if you encounter symptoms like irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, or fainting.

Before using Azithromycin, inform your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions:

• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Myasthenia gravis (a muscle condition)
• Heart rhythm disorder

Azithromycin Dosage

Azithromycin is available in oral tablet form, with various strengths such as 250 mg, 500 mg, and 600 mg. Below are the standard dosages recommended for different infections:

Bronchitis/Pneumonia:

• 500 mg once daily for three days, or 500 mg on the first day followed by 250 mg once daily on subsequent days.

Sinusitis:

• 500 mg once daily for three days.

Skin infections and Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis:

• 500 mg on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily on subsequent days.
