From myths like getting HIV through the air, shaking hands, sharing food or drinks, to the misconception that it can be transmitted through sweat, misinformation about the spread of HIV is widespread. Among these myths, a particularly common one is whether HIV can be transmitted by kissing.

Is it possible to contract HIV by kissing someone? This article aims to debunk this myth and provide clarity on the subject.

Can You Contract HIV From Kissing?

The answer is no. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that targets and weakens the immune system. Although HIV is transmissible, everyday activities such as kissing do not pose a risk of infection.

You cannot contract HIV through kissing. Research indicates that HIV is transferred through the exchange of bodily fluids like blood, semen, and vaginal fluids, but not saliva.

While HIV can be present in saliva, it cannot be spread through kissing because antibodies and enzymes in saliva neutralize the virus and prevent it from infecting new cells. Only specific body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal fluid, and breast milk can transmit HIV from one person to another.

With this information, you can rest assured that kissing your loved one does not put you at risk of contracting HIV.

HIV Drugs

Although you cannot get HIV from kissing, it’s important to remain aware of other ways the virus can be transmitted. For instance, when kissing leads to more intimate sexual activities, the risk increases. To further protect yourself, you might consider pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which can lower the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by up to 99%.

Two pills, Truvada and Descovy, have been approved for use as PrEP. Truvada is suitable for individuals at risk through sex and needle-sharing, while Descovy is designed for those at risk through sex alone. For those already diagnosed with HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help manage the virus. Though not a cure, ART allows people with HIV to enjoy longer, healthier lives.

ART includes medications such as nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), protease inhibitors (PIs), integrase inhibitors, fusion inhibitors, gp120 Attachment Inhibitors, CCR5 antagonists, post-attachment inhibitors, or monoclonal antibodies, and pharmacologic enhancers.

A consultation with your healthcare provider will guide you through the next steps for your HIV treatment and help you obtain the necessary medication.
