If you’ve suffered from a heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, or other cardiovascular issues, taking the prescription medication Brilinta could help reduce your risk of subsequent heart attacks and strokes.

But what about coffee or other caffeinated drinks while on Brilinta? The positive news is that caffeine doesn’t interfere with this medication. Yet, there are some important points to consider.

What is Brilinta?

Brilinta is a blood thinner that:

  1. Prevents blood clots that can lead to heart attacks or strokes.
  2. Reduces your risk of having another cardiovascular event.
  3. Lowers the chance of death from severe cardiovascular incidents.
  4. Aids people with vascular stents due to its anticoagulant properties.

Depending on your medical condition, Brilinta is available in two dosages: 60 mg and 90 mg. It is often prescribed in conjunction with aspirin to enhance its cardiovascular benefits. However, it’s important not to exceed 100 mg of aspirin daily, as higher doses can diminish Brilinta’s effectiveness.

Is it safe to consume caffeine while taking Brilinta?

Given that coffee is a common source of caffeine, understanding its interaction with Brilinta or any other medications you are taking is crucial.

Current evidence shows no adverse interactions between caffeine and Brilinta.

According to Ani Rostomyan, Pharm.D., BCPS, APH, a pharmacogenomics pharmacist, both caffeine and Brilinta are metabolized in the liver by different metabolic enzymes. Consequently, they do not naturally interact, providing no documented evidence of interaction.

Brilinta side effects

Brilinta does come with certain risks and potential side effects. The most significant risk is an increased likelihood of bleeding since it inhibits blood clotting. If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Urine that is pink, red, or brown.
  • Wounds or scrapes that bleed continuously.
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
  • Blood clots or coughing up blood.
  • Sticky stools that are red or black.

Users of Brilinta might also notice an increase in bruising and nosebleeds. Less common side effects include respiration difficulties and changes in breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if you encounter these symptoms.
