**Humalog vs. Novolog: Understanding Their Differences and Similarities**

Humalog and Novolog are both insulins designed to treat diabetes. Curious about how they compare? Keep reading to find out more.

Humalog and Novolog are fast-acting insulins that are effective for short durations. Humalog is suitable for adults and children over the age of three, whereas Novolog is approved for children as young as two years old.

Both insulins are human insulin analogs, and they are similarly effective in managing diabetes. It’s crucial to note that Humalog and Novolog should not be used together due to the risk of drug interactions. Typically, they are part of a broader regimen that includes intermediate and/or long-acting insulins.

Key Differences Between Humalog and Novolog

Humalog is the brand name for insulin lispro. After injection, Humalog begins to work within about 15 minutes, peaks at around one hour, and remains effective for another 2 to 4 hours.

On the other hand, Novolog is the brand name for insulin aspart. Similar to Humalog, Novolog starts working 15 minutes post-injection, peaks in about one hour, and continues its effect for 2 to 4 hours.

Side Effects

The common side effects of most insulins include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Comparing Effectiveness in Different People

A small study found no significant differences between insulin lispro (Humalog) and insulin aspart (Novolog) in people with type 1 diabetes. Insulin levels in the bloodstream were similar 30 minutes after injecting either lispro or aspart, and both insulins cleared out within 4 hours. Additionally, the impacts on glucose, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism were comparable. Research indicates that the clinical effects of insulin lispro and insulin aspart are nearly identical.

Dosing guidelines do differ between Humalog and Novolog. Humalog should be taken 15 minutes before or immediately after a meal. In contrast, Novolog is most effective when taken 5 to 10 minutes before starting a meal or at the beginning of one.
